What Is a Chashaku?
(茶杓)
A chashaku is a traditional bamboo tea scoop used to measure matcha powder from a tea caddy (natsume) into a tea bowl (chawan). Unlike modern spoons, the chashaku is shaped to deliver the proper proportion of matcha while honoring the ritual and rhythm of tea preparation.
Simple in form, yet essential in function, it is a foundational tool in Japanese tea ceremony.
Kubo Sabun
Master of his craft
This chashaku is handmade by Mr. Kubo Sabun, the 24th-generation master craftsman of Chikumeido, a revered family workshop based in Takayama, Nara, Japan.
For over 500 years, the Takayama region has been the heart of traditional tea utensil making. Chikumeido’s work has been exhibited internationally and has even been presented to the Emperor of Japan and showcased at the Louvre.
Each chashaku is carved by hand from carefully selected bamboo, shaped and finished to achieve a smooth, skin-like texture that reflects the artisan’s precision and restraint.
